I am a bilingual (English and Spanish) and bicultural licensed psychologist (PSY 27559) in the state of California. I trained in a Ph.D. program accredited by the American Psychological Association. I completed my clinical internship at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System in Behavioral Medicine and my post-doctoral fellowship at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. I have expertise in using evidence-based interventions to help individuals enhance motivation, confidence, and commitment with health related changes in a way that is aligned with personal values. I also have extensive experience working with people who are dealing with mental health issues as well as life related stressors.
My research interest and expertise focuses on decreasing barriers of access to medical and mental health care in populations that have been historically & systematically excluded, including Latinx in the U.S. and Latin America, LGBTQI+, and African American populations. Further, my research has focused on coping, substance use, sexual health, and risky sexual behavior among vulnerable to chronic diseases.
I work with people who are interested in improving:
Depression
Social Anxiety and other specific phobias
Generalized Anxiety
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Panic Disorder
Health behavior (e.g., adherence, coping with chronic illness, managing chronic pain)
Smoking cessation
Insomnia
Trauma/PTSD
Issues related to experiences of LGBTQI+
Sexual health
Grief
Stress
I know that it is sometimes challenging and scary to engage in therapy. I approach my work with patients with this in mind. I do my best to create a safe space for patients to explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors as they relate to their therapy goals. Additionally, we work together to identify ways to change thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are getting in the way of making health and positive changes in the patient’s life.
My approach to treatment centers around supporting clients in reaching their own goals through individualized use of evidence-based practice (cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy) in a way that is client-centered. In short, I approach my work collaboratively while simultaneously structuring treatment to maximize client success.
When I am not working, I prioritize my self-care in various ways, which includes spending time with my family and friends, traveling, eating great food, riding my bike, exercising, enjoying the beach, and, sometimes, enjoying some quiet time by myself.
